    ATS-Friendly Resume Formatting Checklist

“ATS-friendly” is mostly boring: simple structure, consistent headings, and readable formatting. Use this to avoid the common parsing pitfalls.

    Layout

    • Use a single-column layout.
    • Avoid text boxes, tables, icons-as-text, and graphic skill bars.
    • Use standard headings: Experience, Education, Skills, Projects (if relevant).

    Typography

    • Keep it readable (no tiny fonts, no ultra-tight line spacing).
    • Use one or two simple fonts; avoid novelty fonts.
    • Use bold for emphasis, not heavy styling.

    Dates & consistency

    • Use a consistent date format (e.g. “Jan 2023 – Oct 2025”).
    • Keep job titles and company names consistent and easy to scan.
    • Don’t hide gaps with confusing formatting; clarity beats cleverness.

    Export

    • Use PDF if text remains selectable/searchable.
    • If PDF parsing is flaky, submit DOCX.
    • Always verify the exported file renders cleanly (no shifted sections).

    Don’t over-focus on “ATS scores”

Different ATS systems vary; recruiters also screen manually. The best outcome comes from clarity + relevance. For job match strategy, read Resume Keywords & Job Match.
